For those that know me, and what I have been through in life, many ask me what my secret is to getting through the tough times, building a life I love, and maintaining a positive outlook when challenges arise. When I stop to think about this, one word comes to mind: fortitude.


Fortitude isn’t just another word for courage. It’s actually a combo of resilience, perseverance, and mental toughness. Basically, it’s what helps us handle stress, bounce back from setbacks, and keep our eyes on the prize, no matter what life throws at us. Research even shows that people with high levels of fortitude tend to be happier, healthier, and more successful in both their personal and professional lives.

How to Build and Strengthen Your Fortitude


Alright, so how do we build up this superpower called fortitude? Here are some tips:


  1. Set Clear Goals: Having clear goals gives you direction and purpose. Break big goals into smaller, manageable steps and celebrate your progress. This keeps you motivated and reinforces your commitment.

  2. Embrace Challenges: Try to see challenges as chances to grow instead of threats. With the right mindset, you can turn tough situations into learning experiences, which makes you more resilient and successful over time. "There are no problems, only opportunities." I first heard this when I was in my early 20's from a boss that inspired me. It stuck with me since then. I often lean into that simple sentence when I am confronted with challenges in my own life, and I know that it has come out of my mouth on more than one occasion when in session with my clients.

  3. Practice Self-Discipline: To build fortitude and find your way to success, you be your own boss. You must lead yourself. Successful leaders don't skip out on important meetings or projects just because "they don't feel like it today". They commit to the goals and practice showing up for those goals, and even more importantly, for themselves, consistently until the goal is reached. To do this, you must cultivate healthy habits and routines. Whether it’s working out regularly, sticking to a sleep schedule, or dedicating time to personal growth, self-discipline helps you stay strong through tough times.

  4. Seek Support: Great leaders will be the first to give credit to the teams that helped get them to the top. They never rise alone. The carefully curate and surround themselves with strong and empassioned teams. Regardless of what your specific goal is, you can surround yourself with supportive friends, family, and mentors. Sharing your experiences, getting encouragement, and even soliciting advice or assistance from others can make a huge difference in how you handle challenges.

  5. Develop Mindfulness: Practicing mindfulness can help you stay present and reduce stress. Techniques like deep breathing and meditation can improve your mental clarity and emotional stability. Learning to keep your mind calm and centered will translate into clearer thinking, increased creativity, improved problem solving skills, and even more meaningful communication and connection with others. This all results in greater success in all areas of your life!

  6. Reflect and Learn: Take time to reflect on your experiences and learn from them. Being honest and open to the self-analysis process will help you to understand what worked and what didn’t help you grow and approach future challenges with more wisdom, experience, and confidence.
